Unlocking the Mystery: What to Do When You've Bought Something with a Lock

So, you've just bought or discovered something—a used file cabinet, a desk, a older tool box you forgot about, or maybe you purchased a used truck topper—and it has a lock...but no key. Now you're faced with the age-old question: how do you get it open? Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's what you need to know when you find yourself in this situation.

First things first, it's important to understand that not all locks are created equal. If you're dealing with a file cabinet, desk, or other office furniture, chances are it has a specific type of lock designed for that purpose. And that's where we come in. At our company, we specialize in office furniture keys, primarily for file cabinets. So, if you're in need of a replacement key for your office furniture, you're in the right place.

Now, before you go searching for a replacement key, you'll want to take a closer look at the lock itself. Look for any markings or numbers that might indicate the manufacturer or model of the lock. They will usually be on the lock itself. These numbers are crucial because they help us identify the exact key you need. Whether it's a Haworth, Steelcase, or HON file cabinet, knowing the manufacturer and lock number is key to getting the right replacement. If you have a file cabinet and your manufacturer is not listed on our site, please reach out to us and we may still be able to help.

But here's where things get a little tricky. While we specialize in office furniture keys, we don't sell keys for tool boxes, truck toppers, or other non-office furniture locks. Why? Because each type of lock requires a specific key with a specific key blank, and we want to make sure you get the right one for your needs. As a small business we can only stock so many key blanks and pay for so much software. We do cut thousands of different keys and cut each one custom for what you order.

Often we get an order, custom cut the key, and then receive an email that the key does not work. Most of the time the reason the key does not work is that our customer ordered a key where the numbers on the lock matched or almost matched what they have, but they do not have office furniture. They have ordered a Steelcase file cabinet key for a motorcycle or a Haworth file cabinet key for a tool box. These will not work, even if the numbers match. We are also not able to offer a refund on the keys, as stated in our listings, because we cut thousands of different keys and custom cut each one. It is not likely that someone else will order the same key number anytime soon. If you find yourself in need of a replacement key for something other than office furniture, we are not able to cut those keys for you.

So, what's next? Once you've identified the manufacturer and lock number, simply reach out to us, and we'll take it from there. We will help you find the perfect replacement key for your file cabinet, desk, or other office furniture. And before you know it, you'll be unlocking that mystery lock with ease.

Dealing with a lock on your newly purchased item doesn't have to be a headache. By understanding the type of lock you're dealing with and knowing where to turn for help, you can quickly and easily get the replacement key you need. And remember, when it comes to office furniture keys, we've got you covered.
